Contribute To The Planet By Making A Green Move

Absolutely without question it just seems that we tend to collect a lot of us., and our lives also create a law to waste. This fact is never more obvious than when you are packing up all of your closets and cupboards and drawers getting ready for a big move. In this year alone, more than 4 million Canadians will pack up their entire households for a big move. If you’re among all of those people that are can I be transitioning this year, please consider the environment and choose as many environmentally friendly options as possible.

Moving environmentally friendly doesn’t mean that you have to get horses and wagons and wrap all of your furniture up in old dusty blankets and pack all of your boxes with old newspapers and transport everything across the country in three months camping along the way.

Environmentally green moves just mean to be an aware of your environment and choosing methods which are the least harmful to it. Environmentally friendly moves are a growing trend in the moving industry. It generally involves rethinking traditional methods for moving which have always been a big waste such as tossing away boxes made of cardboard and dumping bubblewrap and plastic that you use for moving your belongings. Green moving just means to rethink how you’re doing everything and look at your move through environmentally friendly glasses. It’s about making choices that you can rest comfortably with knowing that you did your part.

In the first place try not to accumulate so much stuff. When you really think about it less is better for the environment anyway, if you make that kind of a choice it also means that you have less stuff to move. The last things that you have to move also mean the last diesel that the moving trucks will have to burn to get your stuff there. Environmentally friendly moving can also be thought of in terms of how you’re going to live at your new home.

You probably want to consider holding a garage sale, or listing your items on craigslist or through websites such as eBay or giving away items to the neighbors and friends.

Most moving companies offer used or recycled cardboard cartons. Make sure your moving boxes are constructed of recycled materials. Take advantage of companies like ferguson moving and storage which offer environmentally friendly choices.

Slowdown on that bubble wrap. Most of the time bubble wrap is not necessary and you can use newspaper for the same items at a much lesser cost and its environmentally friendly. I’m not suggesting that you have to use newspapers, but recycled white newsprint instead. Old newspapers make everything dirty including your hands in everything you catch not a great choice when you’re trying to clean the house for the new owners or unpacking at your new home and then having dirty hands that you might touch the walls of the counters and have additional cleaning that will be required. Another choice is to also use up old sheets and towels for packing material these often make great stuffing areas for empty cavities that you have inboxes. These cavities must be filled anyway so items in the cartons will not move during transportation across Canada.

You also want to check out environmentally friendly products for cleaning when you’re moving out of your old house.

Ask your movers if they have environmentally friendly choices that you can select from. Ask if they’re moving blankets are made from 100% cotton which has been recycled and if they rent plastic packing crates.

Natural Gas Prices in 2010

Natural Gas Powers Texas

According to the US Dept. of Energy, Texas produces and consumes more electricity than any other state. Over half of Texas’ energy comes from natural gas-powered generation plants. Texas produces 25% of the nation’s natural gas and is the largest producer; storing and supplying natural gas via pipeline for all regions of the country. Yet while Texas has large reserves of low grade coal, most of what is burned in its coal-fired plants is brought in via train from Wyoming and Montana.

So, it makes sense for Texas electric power generators to rely more on the supply of natural gas in our back yard rather than waiting for the next 10,000 tons of coal to roll in from Wyoming. Natural gas burns cleaner than coal and does not leave behind large amounts of cinder and ash that require proper disposal.

In the past, natural gas was usually uncovered when drilling for oil. Many middle eastern oil companies commonly used natural gas to push oil out from deposits in the earth and then let the gas burn off (called “flaring”). This was because there was neither large local demand for natural gas, nor a way to safely transport it overseas to markets that wanted it.

In Texas, the practice was very different. Natural gas and oil have been twin commodities that helped build Texas. Natural gas pipelines stretch in all directions from Texas and it has long been used throughout the US for heat, light, and electrical generation. So, it’s little wonder that in this country its price has long been bound to oil, a commodity in a very volatile market where prices are often shaped by world events. For this reason, power generating companies have paid more for natural gas than coal, nuclear, and wind. Because it is the most expensive and so heavily relied upon, the price of natural gas determines the price of electricity.

When the Wave Broke

Throughout 2007 and into 2008, petroleum and natural gas prices rose due to a popular tide of speculative investment. This drove resource development and innovation in natural gas technologies to bring gas reserves to market. Among these:

- The growing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) trade is expected to increase at 6.7 percent per year until 2020. New fleets of inexpensively built ships and refineries expanded the industry worldwide. LNG now involves 15 exporting countries and 17 importing countries, including the US.

- Qatar announced its goal to develop both its Northfield natural gas reserve production (from roughly 54 billion cubic feet in 1995 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet in 2008) and its Gas-to-Liquids capacity. Qatar is now the world’s largest LNG exporter.

- Developments in horizontal drilling and rock fracturing techniques with high pressure water provide lower-cost access to several huge deposits of natural gas trapped in common shale. These include the Marcellus shale bed and the Barnett shale in Texas (much of it under Ft. Worth) – which has been estimated at holding 26 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and is producing 2 billion cubic feet per day.

In July, 2008, the petroleum/natural gas price wave peaked. Gasoline surged to over $4.00 per gallon and natural gas prices to $13.69 per billion BTU (mmBTU). The cost of Texas electricity exploded.

Inundated with high fuel prices, consumers all across America cut their travel and their energy use. In the fall of 2008, the economy contracted so severely that businesses laid off workers or closed. They stopped using natural gas to heat their buildings and stopped needing electricity to power their machinery. This helped drive down the price of oil, gasoline, and natural gas. But in the case of natural gas, the big developments in LNG supply and natural gas shale brought enormous amounts of natural gas out of the ground. Ready to use, it now lay idle in pipelines, tanks, and ships at sea. With plenty of supply but no demand, the price sank further.

One year after the price peak, the DOE’s EIA reported in its weekly natural gas storage report for August, 14, 2009:

“Working gas in storage was 3,204 Billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of Friday, August 14, 2009, according to EIA estimates… Stocks were 562 Bcf higher than last year at this time and 513 Bcf above the 5-year average of 2,691 Bcf.”

By September, 2009, natural gas lost over 80% of its July 2008 value and had plummeted to $2.409 per mmBTU. Texas electric rates fell as well.

Big Supply + Little Demand = Low Price

Because of booming US domestic supply, natural gas’ price tumble has decoupled it from oil’s price. As analyst Fadel Gheit put it, “[O]il is a global commodity; gas is a regional commodity. You can have a huge discrepancy in gas prices from country to country, from continent to continent, because of a lack of adequate transportation – the means of shipping to take gas from where it’s found in abundance to where it’s needed.”

As a regional commodity now, present US domestic natural gas prices are somewhat insulated versus shocks from international problems. New shale deposits being drilled throughout the lower 48 states provide a more stable supply and stable pricing. As a result, LNG imports to the US are dropping, prompting the United Nations International Energy Agency’s chief economist, Fatih Birol, to forecast a world-wide natural gas glut continuing through 2015.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, energy commodities analyst Stephen Schork painted this picture of the current natural gas supply: “We have more gas than we know what to do with in the U.S.; we have more waterborne gas floating around the world’s oceans that doesn’t have a home.”

When natural gas prices began their slide, many natural gas companies capped their wells and cut their production. The EIA recently reported in its Short Term Energy Outlook:

Total marketed natural gas production is estimated to have increased by 3.7 percent in 2009, despite a 59-percent decline in the working natural gas rig count from September 2008 to July 2009.

Even Qatar announced it will not pursue any new development in its North field reserve for another four years.

Right now, the two big drivers of US consumption are its winter and its economy. This winter, an early cold snap increased heating demands for much of the country and even caused a brief $1 price increase. Though faltering, the US economy has improved somewhat since September, 2008. Because of the slight contraction in productivity and the early cold weather, natural gas prices have risen from their September, 2009 low -but they are still 50% lower than their peak in 2008. The EIA statistic for the January 27, 2010 price at the Henry Hub in New York ($5.42 mmBTU) is 14% higher than the same date last year ($4.75).

The big new for 2010 is it’s still a natural gas buyer’s market. With storage levels still at 5 year highs, enhanced domestic production capabilities, and slow consumption growth, prices are not expected to rise dramatically through 2010. EIA projects that the natural gas spot price at the Henry Hub will increase to an average of $5.25 mmBTU in 2010, which is $1.27 more than the 2009 average of $3.98 mmBTU. Remember, this is an average price; seasonal increases will occur, especially during the summer cooling months in Texas when power demand is at its height.

For Texas electricity consumers, this means that energy prices will remain low through for the rest of the year, though there will be some fluctuation due to seasonal demand, as stated. However, one thing about the near future is certain: consumption of natural gas will increase as economic conditions improve. Businesses will need more people as they will get back to running equipment and machinery – and they will all use more energy. As consumption rises, more generators will burn natural gas to meet that need. Natural gas prices will rise. And so will the price of Texas electricity.

Long Term Solutions for the Texas Energy Consumer

The best thing an electricity consumer in Texas has right now is energy choice. If you sign on to a two year (24 month) plan now, you can lock in the current 2010 rate through 2012. Switching between now and spring when rates are low could save you hundreds of dollars over the next two years. Why? Because you can take advantage of a long term fixed energy plan that locks in the current low energy price. In the near future, the EIA projects that prices will increase in 2011, averaging $6.00 mmBTU as the existing surplus shrinks in the face of a rebounding economy. That’s a 13% increase in price. Right now, if your energy plan is locked in at .114 cent/kWh for 1500 kWh per month, you’re paying about $171/month. But in 2011 given a 13% average increase, your bill could jump to $193.23/month. That’s a difference of $22.23/month or $266.76 for the year.

Getting Into the Details of a Park Bench

Most of the time, when people get to hear park bench, the most common idea that could possibly pop into their heads is a person who is sitting at one of the local parks. How the View of Mental Illness Has Changed Over the Past 50 Years

Even though there have been numerous advancements in the way of treating mental disorders in the past 50 years, there is still a certain stigma surrounding the views on mental illness. Many people still mistakenly believe that someone with a mental illness is simply lazy or they will place blame on the parents if the patient is a child. These feelings even radiate through insurance companies that are many times reluctant to pay for necessary mental health treatments. However, science has concluded that mental illness is the direct cause of genetics combined with environmental factors.

Deinstitutionalizing Mental Facilities

Several decades ago in the 1960s, the deinstitutionalization movement brought about an abrupt, 180 degree change in the way patients with mental illness were handled and treated. This movement called for the removing of mentally ill patients from state and private institutions where many times these people received little to no care and treatment. This was done in order to alternatively give patients medications and therapy. When this movement took place, the tides begin to change in regards to the general attitude of those with a mental illness. The idea behind this was to make the public believe these people were members of the community and not just “crazies” in need of institutionalization.

Family Therapy

And research has proven that a patients relationship with their family members can positively or negatively affect their mental illness. Because of this research, family therapy was born and this therapy has allowed those with an illness to stay out of institutions. Today, the treating physician as well as the active family members are directly responsible for integrating people with mental illness into society.

Treatment Centers

Also, if a mentally ill person needs to be hospitalized, there is less of a chance now than before that they will be subject to restraints and isolation. Today’s psychiatry leans toward day treatment centers where there are less staff members and an increased emphasis on group therapy as opposed to individual therapy, which paved the course for halfway houses as well as allowing patients with mental illness to go home at night and still receive treatment during the day.

Problems with Deinstitutionalizing

Of course, there were some negatives that came along with the deinstitutionalizing of metal facilities. There are some people with mental illness who should be put into an institution because they are dangerous to themselves and others. However, because putting them into an institution or a state hospital without their consent is not a legal option, these people have either made their way into prisons or out onto the streets.

Support Organizations

The mental health experts of today understand that those with mental illness greatly benefit from social networks providing care, acceptance, and support even in the most difficult of times. And mentally ill people who receive this kind of support tend to recover faster. Because the individual communities throughout society are not as close knit as they once were, mentally ill patients no longer receive their primary support from family and friends, which finally brought about the explosion of support organizations.

In the United States, many people know about Cinco de Mayo. Huge crowds cannot wait to start the festivities every May. But few know the really history for this Mexican celebration. The average person in the States will say it has something to do with “the Mexican freedom thing,” that is not the truth. Independence Day for Mexico is the 16th of September.

During the 1950s, the United States had a program called The Good Neighbor Policy that encouraged Americans to reach out to our neighboring countries. Cinco de Mayo was first introduced to Americans at this time. In the 1960s, Chicano activists made the holiday more visible as a method to inspire cultural pride among Mexican-Americans.

By the 1980s, the holiday was slowly catching on. During this decade of commercialism, Cinco de Mayo was advertised as a great holiday to spend drinking the alcoholic beverages made by several American companies. These companies really brought Cinco do Mayo into the mainstream of American culture, although they diluted the true meaning behind it, which was to celebrate the Mexican victory over the French in 1862.

As Cinco de Mayo became more mainstream, more Americans wanted to explore better ways to celebrate. They began researching the Mexican traditions, foods, and music that would make Cinco de Mayo a holiday to anticipate every year.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is a terrific reason to treat yourself to Mexican culture. Partygoers can have fun dressing up in colorful costumes, decorate their houses with symbols of Mexico, and have a great time. Children hear about this holiday at school and share what they have learned with the family.

Some people throw big parties on May 5th. It’s not a holiday reserved just for Mexicans anymore. All sorts of ethnic groups now jump on the bandwagon. Some groups even hold their own parades and festivals to add to the celebratory mood. In some places, the celebration has spread to immense proportions. New York, Port Huron, and Los Angeles are all home to huge Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

For those preferring to celebrate closer to home, it is simple to plan a special night of their own. They might make some Cinco de Mayo food, decorate, and put on some traditional mariachi music to listen to. Private parties are now nearly as popular as public parties held in bars, restaurants, and communities across the nation.

Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to explore those Mexican recipes you have been curious about. Make some great food for your family to enjoy and share some Mexican culture. Invite your friends to come over and have them bring some snacks.

If you find that the margaritas are better at the Mexican cantinas or you just love eating out, go for it. Your neighborhood Mexican bistro will have a great celebration planned. Just sit back, enjoy the music, and dance to your heart’s content. There is nothing that says you have to make it a huge celebration, either. I Am Wedding Hear Me Roar

Salt or pepper, catchup or mustard, bread or toast, the basketball game court-side or a booth at the opera, guess what, you can stop making these small bothersome decisions. You do not have to worry about them anymore. No, you are not dead; you are getting married. It is the reason you were born. If you think about it, it is a pretty good deal, actually. I mean, women enjoy making decisions for other people. That is why they are so darn good in the workforce and why there should be a woman president.

If a man were in charge of a wedding, we would have some pretty plain and ordinary ceremonies with very little style and zero class. We would have roses, a woman would have roses, and about two dozen other flower varieties that make roses look good. We would have wedding favors; they would languish for years in someone’s attic, closet, or cedar chest. A woman would have unique wedding favors that people would cherish and put on display in their homes.

Men can plan weddings and can come up with beautiful ideas that would enhance the wedding and make it special, but only by thinking like a woman. After the wedding, we would be heading for sports camp or a fishing resort to spend our honeymoons. By listening to women, we instead have a wonderful time lying on a beach being catered to by a staff that wants nothing but our happiness. I would not have thought of it but hey, I will take the beach any day of the week.

From the moment the doctor said, “It’s a boy!” A woman started making decisions for you. Does it sound like a bad thing? Well, you would be wrong to think so. If it were not for that woman taking charge at that precise moment, you would have lain there butt naked, shivering in the cold, crying your heart out. (Just like the last time a girlfriend left me.) Women do everything well but what they excel at is making decisions. I am not necessarily referring to major, planetary stuff, although if they were in charge, there would be peace and the planet would be in great shape. I am talking about everyday stuff, weddings included.

Not for the catch and see if this sounds familiar to you because it is a design that was set up by a clever woman centuries ago and, with the patience born of womanhood, has proven throughout the years to be a huge success. From the day that you were born, you were “groomed” to be a loyal and obedient husband. Every decision in your life was made by a woman. She loved you and cared for you and told you what to eat, (and when to eat it) what to wear, (and how to wear it) and what to say (do I need to say it?)

Then came the day that we grasped at our independence and we took control of our own lives rebelliously. When mother lay our clothes out we left them there on the bed. We chose our own set of clothes from the closet and we left for school leaving her standing at the doorway with a defeated look on her face at least, until we were out of site. Then she smiled at our foolishness. After all, the closet is full of clothes that she picked out, not the man-child.

For the next twenty or so years, we believed we were making the decisions that forged our independence, never realizing that we were being cleverly manipulated into becoming the kind of husband she and your new wife’s mother decided you would be years before you were born. Now, when you walk into a room and your mother, your mother-in-law, and your wife stop talking and smile at you, you jokingly ask if they were talking about you. They will all look at each other and laugh because they were talking about you. They were talking about how well you turned out and they were also discussing how to “groom” your son. Congratulations, you are about to be a dad.

A Wedding is a Lopsided Affair

Weddings are so lopsided that it boarders on complete and utter unfairness. It is all about the bride and almost nothing about the groom. Men might as well just turn into cellophane until it is time to say I Do. In a world of equality, the one thing that has not changed and shows no signs of morphing is the wedding.

Eve the nickname is feministic. The brides big day, give me a break; why not, the grooms big day? Men have been programmed into thinking, (Probably by our mothers and other female family members.) to think of it as a woman’s day. All the major decisions about your wedding are going to be made by the bride. I suppose it is their way of practicing for how they are going to run your lives for the next one hundred years.

Have you ever seen a man shop for a tuxedo for more than half an hour? You won’t because the man’s outfit at the wedding is just not that important. We have to wear one because some woman a couple of thousand years ago decided to stick the groom in a black suit and stand him in a corner until it was time to get married. Then they stuck that line about love, honor, and obey into the vows and winked at each other knowing that would give us the false sense of power that we would be carrying into the rest of our lives.

The bride makes all the decisions about the wedding including its location. What is wrong with having the wedding at our favorite pub? Hey, if it were up to the man, this is the way to go. You have a built in bar, plenty of chairs, a bandstand, food, a dance floor, and we could still put the game on the big screen. The perfect, money saving solution that will not even be considered by the bride. If you want the summer wedding favors and she wants the beach wedding favors, brother, wax your surfboard because you cannot win. It just ain’t happening.

They treat us like we have no taste or common sense when it comes to planning a wedding. It is almost as if they think we are just one generation removed from dragging knuckles and cannot make wise wedding decisions. Well, the fact of the matter is, we can make a wise wedding decision when we put our minds to it. (Hey, I was not joking about the pub location,) Why not get married on the field of the Steelers game at halftime? There would be plenty of witnesses, they’ve provided their own food, the entertainment is great, there is bound to be a preacher in the stands who will come out and marry us for free and if not, I think the head referee has the power to perform weddings. You know, “By the power vested in me by the state of Pittsburgh and the NFL, I now pronounce you, husband and wife.” Then he could blow the whistle to cue the marching band! What husband would not want dancing, half naked cheerleaders, you know, for moral support and spiritual guidance.

It is the ultimate wedding that every boy dreams about growing up. Do you think it will ever happen? Probably not, since we were programmed not to argue about it. I tell you what, stick me in a black suit and stand me in a corner somewhere. I’ll be ready when she is.

Easter Flowers: A Celebration Of Rebirth And Spring

Certain types of flowers are used to celebrate Easter, the holiest of days on the Christian calendar; they are commonly referred to as Easter flowers. These flowers are colorful, and they are symbolic of rebirth and the Resurrection. They are perfect reminders of Easter and the upcoming spring season. Common flowers used for Easter include lilies, hyacinths, azaleas, tulips, daffodils, and narcissus flowers.

White lilies tend to be the most popular and traditional Easter flowers, and they are commonly used to decorate churches around the Easter season. These flowers originated in Japan, and Americans started to grow them in the 1940′s. White lilies are known to symbolize the renewal and purity that is associated with Easter, as well as Christ’s Resurrection three days after his death. The lily’s flower petals are said to be shaped in such a way as to represent God’s trumpet calling for Jesus to return. It is of note that white lilies’ growth is forced in greenhouses for the Easter season given how extremely common it is for these flowers to be used around that time.
