Important Elements of Arm Tattoo Designs

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Wearing a tattoo can tell a lot about you. It is a fact that a tattoo tells the whole world about your personality and beliefs. A single arm tattoo makes quite a statement, and therefore requires precision and accuracy in design.

There is no limit to the designs offered by most tattoo artists. You can select from different designs based on personal significance, a bold statement, or something witty. Arm tattoos for men are in a huge demand these days. Preferred by guys of all ages, they don’t usually suit women. Two major reasons for this are, the arm tattoos don’t exactly suit women’s clothing, and there is more surface area in men when it comes to arm tattoos. Some woman may disagree, and chose to get an arm tattoo. If that’s the case, more power to you!

Guys usually go for arm tattoos because they can easily catch anyone’s attention, not being hidden or concealed away within clothing. The summer months make it a great time to show off your cool arm design.

Arm Tattoos for Guys

There are quite a few people who need some time for consideration as to whether they only want a tattoo sleeve or they wish to include the shoulder too. It must be noted though, that once you have decided to include the shoulder, you must be ready to see some alteration and modifications in the design. There are various tattoo artists who can avoid this by giving you the exact design you picked on paper.

Tattoo sleeve will cover the back and front of your arm entirely. It is completely up to you to decide whether you want one whole continuous tattoo or several smaller ones combined to form a pattern. Many people prefer the second choice to the first because it gives the appearance that the entire arm is part of the design.

How many sittings does the procedure require?

The number of sittings and sessions is directly dependent upon the nature of your arm tattoo design. This means if the tattoo is large and complex, it will take longer to finish, as healing time is required between sessions.

Selection of a tattoo design

The tattoo artist you go to will already have many designs for you to choose from. So, if you end up selecting one of these, always ask the opinion of the artist to check whether that particular design will look good on your skin or not. Getting the wrong tattoo at the wrong place and then crying over a poor choice is no use with a tattoo. They tend to stick around for a while. You must be sure that you have picked the right design for yourself. You can even come up with your own personalized designs and patterns. Your tattoo artist will modify these with respect to what will suit you needs best. This is why the opinion of your tattoo artist is of great important and you must always consider it.

There are loads of designs to choose from when it comes to arm tattoos for guys, they are in popular demand and getting the perfect one can say a ton about you and your personality.

The Myths Behind the Conch Shell

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

There are many symbols of Hawaiian culture, such as the lei, the tiki statue, or perhaps even the mai tai. Many of these symbols instantly conjure up images of the beach. The conch shell, one popular Hawaiian symbol, is still used and revered today. A conch is a large, curved seashell that when blown into, will emit a deep, resounding noise. There are two types of shells that can be used: the cassis cornuta and the triton. Depending on how the conch is used, the volume can be low or it could be made to carry as far as a couple of miles.

The conch shell, or “pu” as the Hawaiian people call it, was often used during ancient rituals and chants, particularly to mark the beginning of a formal procedure. One mythological story depicts an ancient race of miniature gods called the Menehune. The Menehune resided in the Waolani, or heavenly place, on Oahu. They were reportedly controlled by the sound of a conch shell, which was used by Chief Kiha. One day, the Menehune stole the conch from the chief and blew it so loudly and continuously that the villagers complained to the chief. The chief sent one of his people to retrieve the conch shell but on the journey back to the village the conch shell was chipped. This chipped shell can be seen at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

Some historical conch shells have been a more recent discovery. Take for instance the pu that was recovered from the sunken yacht of King Kamehameha II, along with his long lost treasure. The conch was found by a team of archaeologists from Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. It was buried in the sand of the North Shore of Kauai after the treasure was first placed there. It is thought that the conch shell along with the other artifacts recovered were intended to be used to welcome King Liholiho who was visiting the area on his royal yacht.

Traditionally, conch shells have been used as a way to show honor to someone. One such instance was the 112th birthday of Duke Kahanamoku, a legendary Hawaiian surfer. The ceremony began with the approach of a canoe called Hawaii Loa flanked by 112 surfers and other canoes. As the procession came near the beach, a conch shell was blown. Another conch on the shore sounded to the North, South, East, and West in response.

The conch shell, or pu, is still used in Hawaii today. It is often blown at hula festivals, especially during the presentation of the royal court. It is also used as an opening ritual for the state legislature of Hawaii and as a show of respect to celebrities, royalty, and other important people. Countless traditional ceremonies such as weddings and parties still kick off with a good conch bellow. The next time you find yourself in a formal Hawaiian gathering or luau, don’t be surprised if you hear the resounding call of the pu.

The History of the Christmas Tree

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Christmas tree decoration is famed to have started in Germany somewhere near the 16th century. Devout Christians would decorate trees or supplement with pyramids made of wood and candles. Gradually this custom gained popularity in England after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria decorated a tree in Windsor Caste using fruits and gingerbread.

The first Christmas tree in America was put on display by German settlers in Pennsylvania as a fundraiser for the church. The Christmas tree continued to cause outrage through the 1850′s when people viewed it as paganism, but by 1890, Christmas tree popularity was on the rise. Americans did change a few things to suite their tastes, decorating trees with homemade decorations rather than the traditional fruits and berries. The introduction of electricity inspired the decoration of Christmas trees with light. Soon every important building in town was adorned with a Christmas tree.

Other legends hold that Martin Luther, founder of the protestant faith was immersed in the beauty of stars shining throughout the boughs of a fir tree that he brought one home and placed a candle on every branch to recreate such beauty. Many other legends exist, even some concerning spiders. Ultimately now, it is up to you to decide how your tree is decorated.

To assure that you have a wonderful decorated tree every year there are a few steps to take. If your tree is a fresh cut tree, make sure to water it frequently, especially for the first week when it will absorb several quarts of water. Always keep the reservoir filled; some take the extra step of purchasing a fertilizing Christmas tree preservative, available many places online.

When you place decorations on your tree start with the lights and begin on the inside and work your wayout. Put the lights on the base first, as it’s the thickest part of the tree. Weave the light strings on the inside branches and move to the outside.

As well, ornaments should adorn not only the outside of the branches but the outside as well. Placing the ornaments on the outside of the branches creates depth in the design. Using traditional less dramatic ornaments for fill is ideal. Solid balls are good filler items; about 20 are needed for each 2 feet of tree. All of your special ornaments should be placed on the outermost branches of the tree. Here is where you create your special interest tree. Now the creativity begins. There are a million theme ideas to choose from.

Any tree is going to be beautiful if it represents the creative portion of your soul. You can even tie your tree ornamentation into your Christmas treats. For fun, try adorning some Christmas ornament cupcakes or try matching your Christmas tree decorations to a batch of edible Christmas toppers cookies. The best part about Christmas is that you can carry the decor through every element. Experimentation is the key when decorating for any holiday. Try out what you like and use that decor throughout your design.

In God We Trust

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Copyright © 2012 Bob and Penny Lord’s Site

During the course of a year we hear comments about American Exceptionalism. Now usually this is referenced to a general consensus that the United States of America should play an uncommon role in World affairs. Some say America has the role of worldwide policeman. Of course not everyone agrees that we should be extraordinary, however, the premise is that America is an exceptional country.

But today I want to talk about what makes America truly unique.

First, we are the only country founded under God. Our founding fathers were Christians for the most part and held deep beliefs that Government derives its right to rule from God alone. That is a truly special foundation not found in any other nation.

Second, the motto of our country is “In God We Trust.” We used to see it everywhere and it is still on our money. There is a move to remove this motto wherever it is found but we must fight against that for sure.

Third, and most important, God made this country special. We have the best farm land in the world. California feeds the world from the San Joaquin and Central Valleys. I lived there for 4 years and saw millions of acres of grapes, fruits and vegetables. The Central plains are the breadbasket of the world. Arkansas is the number one rice producer in this continent. When I was at the University of Arkansas studying Chemical Engineering I learned that America has more oil under the ground than the rest of the world combined. Three of our states Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have a 200 year supply. The list goes on and on. We have all the natural resources we will ever need, oil, natural gas, coal, minerals and cropland. Arkansas even has a diamond mine and silver mine. Gold is panned in lots of our rivers. Folks, God did that for this country for us to lead the world. We do not need the rest of the world to survive; the rest of the world needs us!

And the best place to live is right here in Conway County, where we respect freedom of religion and our other rights. Where else do the Christian leaders come together and pray for a common cause like we did in 1999 and 2000 for economic relief and God gave us natural gas and other job creators?

Where else does a Baptist minister quote Saint Teresa of Avila in his column in the local paper and a Catholic Brother quotes a Baptist minister in his column?

God made America exceptional and Arkansas most special. Thank God for America.

Forks and Their Folklore

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Whether it is a business lunch you threw for a potential investor or a date at some nice dinner table, many people are in peril when it comes to using the right type of cutlery. In your pantry cabinet or bath storage cabinets you may have endless silverware but it is important to know how to and when to use it. For instance, you will find many people who are unable to tell the difference between a salad and a dinner or dessert fork. Well for those who still do not know the difference, let us find out shall we?

- First of all, unwrap your silverware and lay it on your table. You will see it for yourself that some restaurants only display two forks on the tables whereas, there are others who place a third fork as well. Now there are people who just cannot identify what the three separate forks are meant for.

- For finding out, you need to separate the forks and observe them at large. Compare the lengths of the forks and also the length of tines present in it. In a salad fork, there are shorter tines and the length in total is also small. A dinner fork however, has the tallest tines and is also taller in length as compared to other laid on the table.

- Also the forks needed to be arranged in a way that the diners can have easy access to them. As the different courses start to arrive, the diners will use the forks on table. Salad fork is usually kept at a distance while the dinner fork is right next to your plate. The dessert fork is initially not present on the table. It will be placed on the table when the dessert arrives.

- There are some other varieties of folks also available. In case of a sea food, there is another type of fork used. Fish forks consist of three to four tines. This particular fork will be longer in length. This makes handling the delicate pieces of fish much easier. As for lobster fork, they are longer in length comprising of two tines which simplifies the pulling of crabmeat from the shell. Another sea food eating fork is the specifically meant for eating oysters. Though it is smaller in size, it contains three tines rather than two.

- Another important name in this category is fondue pot. This fork is strange in appearance and looks like some trident. This one is meant to grip olives without destroying them. This olive fork has tines designed outwards. Fondue pots are available in both three pronged and two pronged design. But one thing is for sure that all such forks have tines facing outside.

- You can use fondue forks in desserts as well when it has chocolate or cheese in it. If you have seen a barbeque fork, just imagine it in miniature size and that’s exactly how a fondue fork looks like.

- When the course includes fish along with chips then a wooden chip fork is ideal. It also comes in metallic form. With two tines and a shorter length handle gripping of chips becomes easier.

Simple Yet Effective Gadgets For Protection

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

In recent times, a lot of newly invented devices are being released in the market to promote safety and security in every individual who wishes to live a peaceful life. There are particular states in America who allow and legalized the use of certain weapons in facilitating self-defense because we all know that people are very busy with their jobs and not all of them have spare time to enroll to a martial arts program and finish the training. To counter that dilemma, some states are considering the use of weapons such as stun baton, taser, mice spray, alarms and so on just to obtain personal protection. These gadgets are very common today. You can even find it in the Internet and purchase through online transactions. But abuse can never be avoided. There are still individuals who use these gadgets inappropriately leading to more troubles. So as a moral citizen of a specific country or state, the duty and responsibility of taking care of yourself along with these newly invented gadgets depend in your own hands.

When we speak of self-defense, it simply means that you will protect yourself against the enemy while causing him some injuries to the extent of death depending on the damage that you could cause to the attacker. Though it is quiet immoral to harm or kill someone, this principle of self-defense is being accepted by the law since you are just also doing your duty to be safe. It is not necessary that you would kill the assailant. Giving him injury that could paralyze his body for the meantime can be the best option to prevent the attack. The use of stun baton is very popular today. It is being advertised in the Internet and even in television and newspapers. You might be wondering why the manufacturers are exposing these items to the public so boldly. With this, robbers and other people with bad intentions will now be aware about the existence of these gadgets. In addition to that, they will be more prepared in planning their attacks considering that you’re carrying that weapon.

It is actually a big question why people with the same nationalities are hurting or harming each other. The most probable cause for this increase in crime rate could be the poverty that all countries are experiencing. Due to global recession, a lot of people suffer from deep hunger, illnesses and so on. Since money is the answer to keep your life going, some persons are being pushed to do something bad in order to survive. Though you understand the side of the assailants, you should still think of your own safety first. Never let your kindness jeopardizes your protection. If you’re a woman, it will be best if you have a pepper spray or mice spray in your handbag. This will definitely help you when someone is approaching your way and wants to grab your purse. So be very careful when you are roaming around the market. You might not notice that you’re mobile phone or wallet is already missing. Keep your guards up and do not let this kind of people hurt you.

Important Things to Know in Airport Checkpoints

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

As time passes by, change comes along. This principle also applies in rules and regulation of a particular country. One of the best examples is the new rules in air travel. Each month, there is a significant change in policies to meet the demands and provide safety to passengers. If you are used in travelling through plane from one place to another, you would really notice these distinct changes. All airports have some rules in common according to the protocol of a particular country or state. Most changes occur in the security system. We know for a fact that there are so many checkpoints to be cleared before you can finally be on board. Even if you are in a hurry on not, you still need to undergo the same process since there will be nobody who is exempted to the general rule or else, the safety of the people could be jeopardized. Most passengers are advised to check and be familiar with the security system before the actual day of the flight. By doing this, you will never run out of time. It is a good idea to know about the travel rules of a particular place. If you have questions while you are familiarizing some things, do not hesitate to consult or ask the authorities. It is best to be well informed as early as possible since being in a hurry during the day of your flight could be quiet uneasy to your part especially if it is your first visit to the place.

As you enter to the airport, you must be aware already that there will be more than one checkpoint. Usually, there are three of them depending on the policy of the state. First, you will be checked as you will register your seat number on the plane. It is the moment wherein you will present you plane tickets and boarding passes. Handling your luggage is also necessary in this assessment. They will also check your identification card if it goes according to the data in your plan ticket. You can hand over your valid student’s identification card, driver’s license, professional license and any kinds of valid identification cards. Once your luggage has been checked, it will now be brought to the plane. Make sure that there is nothing delicate in your baggage since it will be placed under the plane in the baggage area. If you have fragile items with you, it is suggested to carry them on. Firearms or any sharp objects are strictly prohibited so never attempt to bring one. It will only cause you a lot of delay once they will find out that you’re carrying harmful objects and deadly weapons.

Second, you will now pass through an x-ray machine wherein your carryon luggage will also be screened. Any form of metals will be easily detected by their metal detector. You will be advised to remove all your jewelry as well as your shoes. Just follow rules promptly so that all things will go smoothly and fast. Before you will board, they will conduct the final security check. You will then again present your boarding pass and identification card. This step is quiet fast and easy as long as you are not suspicious in appearance. If you have nothing against the rules, then try to relax and stay calm. Do not be nervous since it is only an assessment that would ensure protection and safety to the public.

The History of Toffee Has Six Highlights and Possible Theories

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

The origin of the term toffee is very unclear and debatable, however some of the people believe it comes from the world “tafia.”In the Creole language, toffee is said to mean “a combination of sugar and molasses.Among other interesting facts are: How the word “toffee” is said to refer to toffee’s characteristics. How a 19th century confection is thought to have evolved into English toffee. And that many toffee varieties now exist.

Almonds compose English toffee which has a distinctively buttery taste to it. This sweet candy is popular all over the world and comes in various forms. There are soft chewy variants of Michigan toffee and there are harder versions that may be covered in chocolate and nuts. English toffee has an unclear history and because of this there has been a significant amount of discussion regarding its origin. Food historians can pinpoint some highlights in its history.

No one is sure where the term came from or what it really means

The word toffee was first published in the Oxford English Dictionary in the year 1825. But, several of them believe that the term existed before it was included in the dictionary even though there are no particular accounts of the exact time it first appeared. Additionally, there not much details about the origins of the term and subject to much debate.

There is an opinion that it was derived from the word tafia

One theory proposes that it may have come from the word “tafia,” which is a West Indian rum concocted from molasses or sugarcane juice. Cheap rum was used to flavor candies and was un-aged.

The word toffee in Creole means sugar and molasses

The word toffee mean “a combination of sugar and molasses” in the Creole language.Food writer Harold McGee reiterated this claim, but did not identify the Creole language to which he referred.

Its name was developed by using its key characteristics

Toffee originated with toughy or tuffy because of its texture. The phrase likely originated from a British dialect of the south.

It has been said that a 19th century confection is what brought about English toffee

In the early 1800s, sugar and treacle prices were brought down by slave labor. As a result, the key ingredients needed to create toffee became widely available to average consumers and in large quantities. Seeking a frugal solution, these two English ladies combined these two ingredients, with success. These can be compared to the English toffees that we enjoy today. The primary principles to making toffee are stirring and boiling cream and sugar then pouring butter into the mix.

There are now many toffee varieties

Over the years, the basic toffee recipe has evolved into different variations. Flavors like almond and vanilla are commonly used but lemon, peppermint and coffee are also quite popular in old-fashioned toffee recipes. A number of confectioners include milk chocolate as well as milk, dark and white candy chips. A variety of nuts, such as chopped pecans or walnuts, are often added to toffee. Oatmeal and marshmallows are added to give the final product a unique flavor.

Despite all the debate and uncertainty surrounding toffee’s exact origins, it continues to be a delectable treat that many people all over the world enjoy for themselves or give as gifts to their loved ones.

The Legend of Bigfoot – The Sasquatch

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Wandering through the wilderness of the Northern Pacific in the United States or western Canada many claim to have seen a large hair covered wild man in the woods. Descriptions of this beast range from 7 to 8 feet tall and in some cases there are reports up to 10 or 12 feet. Long shaggy hair covers their body and those who have encountered these animals they smell them long before they see them. Imagine the smell of old Uncle Rufus after a bender times ten.

In the United States this creature is more commonly referred to as Bigfoot, while the neighbors to the north prefer to call them Sasquatch. Why Bigfoot? Well imagine the size those sleds would need to be to support someone 8 feet tall. Personally I think choosing the feet, when coming up with a name, was much wiser than any of the other body parts.

Those highly regarded in the scientific field in most cases laugh off Bigfoot as either a mythological creature or an interesting legend without a second thought on the subject. They will refer to videos, footprints and stories that are hundreds of years old as hoaxes carried out by bored mountain men and women. After all how else can they entertain themselves with no television up in ‘dem hills? Hair samples are examined and either quickly identified or labeled as from an unknown species, either having little meaning. Oh, those bellowing sounds in the night? Surely someone out in the woods who happened to drop one of the fire logs on their foot. Hey you would bellow too.

Reputable people have brae ridicule to report sightings every year going back to when the Europeans first arrived here exploring the New World. The Native Americans feared giant, hairy, man-like creature running about in the woods nude. How can we blame them? You and I would be frightened by a big, hairy, naked creature running through our back yard.

The serious part of the debate centers on the body. Why hasn’t anyone ever found the body or a fossil record? Shouldn’t there have been some Bigfoot road kill by now? It’s not like you wouldn’t notice hitting an 8 foot tall beast in the middle of the road. Advocates cite rarely finding the remains of other large animals out in the woods they get broken down pretty quickly out in the forest. Who knows, maybe Bigfoot buries their brothers and sisters just like humans do today.

Bigfoot advocates also suggest that we already have fossil records of the big guy. Most will point to the records of Gigantopithecus and say this creature found its way over to North America from the Asian continent just like other animals throughout history did. Science just does not want to go frontier living out in the boonies in order to conduct the studies needed to actually find one of these creatures in the shrinking, hard to access habitat they live in.

In you are one of the Bigfoot advocates all you need to do is book your next trip to the great outdoors and find the proof needed to convince the skeptics.
