Once upon a time, there was a couple named Naomi and Elimelech that lived in Bethlehem. There was a severe famine in Bethelem at that time and everyone had no food. Because of the famine, Elimelech found that it was hard to provide for the family and instead of depending on God, he decided to move to another place where there was no famine. Elimelech took his family and went to Moab. Elimelech had two sons including Mahlon and Chilion, which both of them were not married at the time when they moved to Moab. While at Moab, Mahlon and Chilion got to know two Moabite women and they actually married them later. Mahlon’s wife was Orpah, while Chilion’s wife was Ruth. After that, Elimelech, the father, had died. Now, Naomi was left with his two sons and daughters in law.

Later, Naomi’s two sons died. After some time, Naomi heard that there was no more famine in Bethlehem and it was having an abundance of harvest. So, she decided to return home, but before she returned to Bethlehem, she told her two daughters in law to return to their own tribes. Orpah bid her mother in law goodbye and left. However, Ruth held on to Naomi and refused to leave her as she told her that she would go wherever Naomi goes. She also said that she wanted to die along side Naomi. Ruth was faithful to Naomi and she kept on insist to follow her.

At last, Naomi allowed Ruth to go back to Bethlehem with her and when they reached Bethlehem, it was harvest time, but they were without money and had no food. Ruth told her mother in law that she wanted to go and pick up leftover grains from a field. The field where Ruth gathered the grain belonged to a rich relative called Boaz. While Ruth was gathering grains, Boaz happened to enter into the field along with her. Boaz asked the workers at the field where Ruth was and told her that she is the daughter in law that came back with Naomi.

During meal time, Boaz, invited Ruth to have dinner with her and Ruth came to sit down at the table with Boaz. She did not eat up all her portion and saved some to bring back to Naomi so that she had food to eat. When Ruth returned home, she poured out the food she saved for her and told her how Boaz had been very kind. Naomi told Ruth that Boaz was a relative and that he is responsible for buying back their land. She told her to put on her best clothes and perfume and to go and lay at the feet of Boaz when he is lying down at the threshing floor.

Ruth did as Naomi told her and layed down at the feet of Boaz, though when he woke up in the middle of the night and became shocked that a woman was sleeping at his feet. Ruth told him everything. Boaz told Ruth that there is another closer relative that is supposed to buy back the land and marry her. If the relative refused, he would be the one to marry her. The next morning, Boaz went to the city gate and talked to the closer relative, whom refused to buy back the land, which in turn allowed Boaz to marry Ruth. Boaz and Ruth had a son immediately following there marriage, called Jesse. Jesse is the father of King David, which has turned to be the family line from which Jesus Christ belonged.

During the course of a year we hear comments about American Exceptionalism. Now usually this is referenced to a general consensus that the United States of America should play an uncommon role in World affairs. Some say America has the role of worldwide policeman. Of course not everyone agrees that we should be extraordinary, however, the premise is that America is an exceptional country.

But today I want to talk about what makes America truly unique.

First, we are the only country founded under God. Our founding fathers were Christians for the most part and held deep beliefs that Government derives its right to rule from God alone. That is a truly special foundation not found in any other nation.

Second, the motto of our country is “In God We Trust.” We used to see it everywhere and it is still on our money. There is a move to remove this motto wherever it is found but we must fight against that for sure.

Third, and most important, God made this country special. We have the best farm land in the world. California feeds the world from the San Joaquin and Central Valleys. I lived there for 4 years and saw millions of acres of grapes, fruits and vegetables. The Central plains are the breadbasket of the world. Arkansas is the number one rice producer in this continent. When I was at the University of Arkansas studying Chemical Engineering I learned that America has more oil under the ground than the rest of the world combined. Three of our states Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have a 200 year supply. The list goes on and on. We have all the natural resources we will ever need, oil, natural gas, coal, minerals and cropland. Arkansas even has a diamond mine and silver mine. Gold is panned in lots of our rivers. Folks, God did that for this country for us to lead the world. We do not need the rest of the world to survive; the rest of the world needs us!

And the best place to live is right here in Conway County, where we respect freedom of religion and our other rights. Where else do the Christian leaders come together and pray for a common cause like we did in 1999 and 2000 for economic relief and God gave us natural gas and other job creators?

Where else does a Baptist minister quote Saint Teresa of Avila in his column in the local paper and a Catholic Brother quotes a Baptist minister in his column?

God made America exceptional and Arkansas most special. Thank God for America.

Our deficit — still major, still huge. Over one trillion.

To deal with our deficit, Obama is making the case for the Buffett rule to go into effect. It states that any taxpayer making over a million bucks should pay a minimum tax of 30%. Buffet made his case for this in a NY Times op-ed piece where he points out that most millionaires and billionaires like himself have effective tax rates lower than 30%.

Many millionaires receive their income from dividends that are taxed at 15%, capital gains that are taxed at 15% and municipal bonds which are exempt from federal tax. Put into perspective, many low and middle class taxpayers have effective tax rates that are higher than the millionaires.

I say we think of our deficit as a business where there are two ways to cut debt: cut spending and raise revenues. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions to cut costs like letting go an employee or discontinuing a product line. And business owners are always looking for ways to grow revenues.

As a country, we need to reduce our deficit by following that example — simultaneously raise taxes and cut spending. As an entrepreneur, I can vouch for the fact that consistently increasing profits is not easy. It takes focus and discipline but that’s what we need to do as a country to get us out of this mess.

I do think that higher wage earners should pay more taxes than they are currently paying but it shouldn’t be by such a wide margin. Why? Think of it this way. Before self-made millionaires became wealthy, they were average Joes or Janes. These average Joes and Janes made a conscious decision to create a better financial future for themselves. Should they be penalized for the risks they took in their businesses and lives to achieve some wealth? They stuck their necks out, thought differently, went for it and made it. Regardless of how we got here, we’re here with this crazy, insane deficit. But it’s our deficit. Everyone needs to own this problem, from million dollar to low income wage earners. Our kids and grandkids cannot inherit this deficit and financial future. They must be given an equal opportunity like we had.

Reports show that we didn’t even have a deficit in 1996. Our country was in the black and stayed that way until 2002. Then in 2003, our deficit skyrocketed to record levels — higher than our country has ever seen. And it has stayed that way. What happens if our kids and grandkids tax rates go up to 60%. That would be a real stinker.

What if our deficit doubles in size? Our currency will be worth nothing (many of you think that’s already the case,) and we won’t be the great country we once were. It’s time that we treat our deficit as a business so our financial future will be better than it is today. Congress, that means you too. Enough with the class warfare. The conch shell, or “pu” as the Hawaiian people call it, was often used during ancient rituals and chants, particularly to mark the beginning of a formal procedure. One mythological story depicts an ancient race of miniature gods called the Menehune. The Menehune resided in the Waolani, or heavenly place, on Oahu. They were reportedly controlled by the sound of a conch shell, which was used by Chief Kiha. One day, the Menehune stole the conch from the chief and blew it so loudly and continuously that the villagers complained to the chief. The chief sent one of his people to retrieve the conch shell but on the journey back to the village the conch shell was chipped. This chipped shell can be seen at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

Some historical conch shells have been a more recent discovery. Take for instance the pu that was recovered from the sunken yacht of King Kamehameha II, along with his long lost treasure. The conch was found by a team of archaeologists from Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. It was buried in the sand of the North Shore of Kauai after the treasure was first placed there. It is thought that the conch shell along with the other artifacts recovered were intended to be used to welcome King Liholiho who was visiting the area on his royal yacht.

Traditionally, conch shells have been used as a way to show honor to someone. One such instance was the 112th birthday of Duke Kahanamoku, a legendary Hawaiian surfer. The ceremony began with the approach of a canoe called Hawaii Loa flanked by 112 surfers and other canoes. As the procession came near the beach, a conch shell was blown. Another conch on the shore sounded to the North, South, East, and West in response.

The conch shell, or pu, is still used in Hawaii today. It is often blown at hula festivals, especially during the presentation of the royal court. It is also used as an opening ritual for the state legislature of Hawaii and as a show of respect to celebrities, royalty, and other important people. Countless traditional ceremonies such as weddings and parties still kick off with a good conch bellow. The next time you find yourself in a formal Hawaiian gathering or luau, don’t be surprised if you hear the resounding call of the pu.

Black History Month provides a glimpse on the comprehensive contributions that Black role models have made on this country and the world. It is often criticized because it encompasses the shortest month of the year and it is often viewed as shortchanging an ethnic group whose diverse members made history, and continue to do so, daily.

What one can appreciate about Black History Month is that it does provide a catalyst to learn and understand about people of color and many of their accomplishments made under extreme circumstances.

Their legacies inspired generations both here and abroad. They became role models and unsung heroes who forged paths and did not find it robbery to reach back and bring others along. The ripple effects of those gestures were often far reaching.

Harold E. Adams was one of many Black role models whom we should honor and he left behind a significant legacy of service and support.

Commissioner Adams, as he was known to so many because he served for 20 years as the Commissioner of the Nassau County (N.Y.) Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction (NCDDAA), was a man of commitment and compassion.

A graduate of Hampton University and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, he served in the Army as a captain during the Korean War, returned home and obtained two graduate degrees – a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and a Masters in Criminology from New York University.

Prior to taking on the role of commissioner, he had worked for the New York State Division of Parole and then he has established and directed a mental health clinic in Brooklyn, N.Y.

During his tenure with NCDDAA, Adams expanded program services to incorporate the whole family dynamic, something unheard of at the time and widely practiced today.

He included residential and outpatient services along with vocational training for clients in addition to training and development resources for counselors. A family and children’s program was also established due to his vision.

For his staff, working for the commissioner resembled a family unit that provided the security of a strong leader, but the knowledge that he cared for the staff, the clients and the community.

Even after he retired, he still maintained a direct connection to improving lives of families and to giving children a constructive resource to stay focused on productive futures.

He was the founding president of the Francis J. Logan Jr. Foundation Inc, a non-profit that was established to fund Camp Discovery, a summer camp experience for children and their families whose lives have been impacted by parental alcohol and chemical abuse, domestic violence and HIV/AIDS. Giving children and their families who were often shunned by society or whose financial status often precluded them being able to have this experience further illustrated his compassion.

This jazz enthusiast and sports buff enjoyed his life and was well loved and respected. His legacy of service and his commitment to making a difference was celebrated recently at the 20th anniversary Friendship Games, an annual track meet that takes place on Long Island, N.Y. The event brings talented athletes from all over the island to compete on Martin Luther King Day to emphasize the legacy of teamwork and unity that for proactive development that King emphasized. Adams supported the development of a lot of young people. Even those who had fallen through the cracks of society or those who did not have the best in Black role models, he became that role model and their bridge to a successful life.

In an era where there is the ongoing clamor for Black role models, Adams set the standard in a style that will sorely be missed, but greatly appreciated by those who benefited from the experience.
